Her first two appearances at New York’s Couture Fashion Week were to show off her evening gown collection. “This is my first time in New York showing my bridal collection nationwide,” Bocci said. Even the spools of colored thread hanging on the wall looked like artwork against the evening’s backdrop of formal white chairs, sparkling rose champagne and warm greetings from Bocci, her staff, and family members, including her mother, uncle, three daughters and even her cousins. On this particular night, however, the area resembled a room at the Waldorf Astoria. On most days, the room serves as a work area for seamstresses and tailors. Then off the two went to find a seat along the runway set up in the back shop at Bocci’s Shelby Township studio. “Yes, I can see you in that,” Hilgendorf said. It is kind of crazy and very different, but still so elegant. “This one is so …,” said Buren, stopping in mid-sentence to study the dress further. Along with the story was a photo of a beautiful bridal gown. So I have to make a statement with my wedding dress,” said the 5-foot-10-inch Buren, while making her way toward a framed story hanging on the wall about Bocci’s first appearance at Couture Fashion Week in New York. “I’ve always been the one in my family who’s been more into fashion. Now her manager - Engle said she is proud to say she has one of the first original Bocci gowns. “She is the most humble and generous person I know,” said Lisa Engle, who went shopping for the perfect gown for her daughter and discovered Katerina Bocci’s designs. It was a night to remember for soon-to-be bride Charese Morrisette of Harper Woods, who won the grand prize Bocci bridal gown, and Trisha Craig of Davisberry, whose nuptials next year will feature a wedding cake created by Haitham Asmar of Indulge. To the delight of her adoring public and some excited brides-to-be, the award-winning couture designer unveiled not only the bridal collection she’s taking to the Big Apple, but presented it along with some big gifts, hors d’ouvres and cake. But Katerina Bocci is not like most fashion designers. Most fashion designers sharing the limelight with Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang or Donna Karan are not likely to share their collection with the public prior to New York City’s Wedding Channel Couture Show.
